East Coast Modern Recognized by Dwell Magazine

We were thrilled to be recognized this week by our favourite design publication, Dwell Magazine. East Coast Modern made a list of the top Modern Prefab companies that every home buyer can rely on.  Only 22 companies from around the globe were recognized by Dwell, this is big recognition for our young company.   East Coast Modern was the only company in Canada to make the list.

The following is a quote from Dwell's Annie Fleming:

"We believe that working with a company that you trust is imperative when building your dream home. Take a look at 20 top tier, reliable, prefab companies from around the world that perfectly execute the modern house look."

Bad at Blogs...Great at Building!

It's been far too long since we have shared updates on our site.   The honest truth is that we have been too busy building homes.  In 2016 we delivered 2 new ModHAUS I projects, both in the South Shore of Nova Scotia, and our first full two story ModHAUS II also on the South Shore.   We locked up 4 very exciting new homes for 2017 which we started building in December.  In 2017 we will be delivering the following new homes to clients across Nova Scotia:

Project 1: We modified our ModHAUS I design to create a courtyard design with a walk out from the master bathroom.  One of the most exciting element of this home is a roughly 600 square foot roof terrace which will overlook the Cabot Links golf course.

Project 2: We will be building our first ModHUAS III, a three bedroom, three bathroom, 1,800 square foot one level home overlooking the Cabot trail in Cape Breton.  This home features some amazing new design and building elements.

Project 3: Another new design, an expanded ModHAUS MINI with 730 square feet on the main floor, a 300 square foot loft overlooking a great room with 19 foot high ceilings.  This project will be delivered to the clients in the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

Project 4: Infinity House, by far our most ambitious project to date.   A fully custom project featuring over 5,000 square feet of living space on one level created through a series of modules connected by breezeways.  We will have lots to share on this project in the latter half of 2017.

We have a new website that will be launching in the Spring that will feature visuals of our full portfolio of built homes and all of our updated design work.

Did our difficult winter weather put your project behind schedule?

The entire Atlantic Canadian population was demoralized by our record winter.  Many people are trying to find help to fix water damage in their homes, and the worst pot holes in history are destroying vehicles.  In Halifax the snow has receded dramatically, but is yet to fully disappear.  The extreme winter weather is having a twofold impact on building projects slated to start this Spring.  Firstly, many building sites still remain inaccessible, and secondly, contractors in the area are extremely busy working to help clients whose homes were impacted by the winter weather.  This Spring showcases a huge advantage of choosing prefab over a traditional building approach; the ability to build at any time of the year, despite the weather conditions.  Factory building almost completely eliminates the impact of weather, and it also stretches the building season.  Your East Coast Modern home can be built in the factory over the winter and delivered as soon your land is accessible.  On the other end of the season you could place your foundation before the ground freezes and have your home delivered during the winter.  The energy industry is doing a great job educating consumers about the benefits of using "off-peak" power.  Prefabricated homes provide the client with a similar opportunity; off peak building.  Wouldn't you rather be enjoying your house during our 8 weeks of summer instead of waiting for your project to be completed?

MODHAUS MINI - Big Demand for Small Scale Living

MODHAUS MINI - Big Demand for Small Scale Living

It is building season and we have been overwhelmed with inquiries over the past month. One theme we have been seeing in the market over the past year is the need for a smartly designed, small home that can be built for $150/square foot without compromising on features.  We have spent a great deal of time trying to solve for this need and we are now happy to announce the addition of the MODHAUS MINI to our portfolio.  The MINI is an 832 square foot 1 bedroom + loft, I bath, 1.5 story home.

East Coast Renovations

We have been busy over the fall and winter on a number of projects, one of which was a major renovation on Steve's home in Halifax.  Because the project was an expansion of an existing structure in an urban environment we didn't have the opportunity to prefab.  We did however apply the full East Coast Modern aesthetic and design approach to the project.  The renovation involved adding an 8 ft extension across the full width of the house on all three storeys.  The addition added over 500 square feet, increasing the total floor space of the home by over 25%.  The home went from 3 bedrooms & 2 baths to 4 bedrooms and 3 baths and all rooms in the existing home were redone.  Nicholas did all of the architectural work, and Steve's wife Margo did the interiors.  Pictured below is the kitchen which is the focal point of the home.  We wanted to share this project to enable you to better understand our approach to design; this is a very similar approach that we bring to all of our projects at East Cost Modern.
